Biographies and Interviews
What do you do in our industry?
I work for Learning Express Toys, specifically at the Lake Zurich location owned by Rick and Joanne Derr. I have the privilege of being a team associate and a buyer for the store. In our industry, I sell products to customers, build relationships with them, network with vendors and other people in the toy industry. I'm continually learning and growing in my role.
What is it about the Toy and Game Industry that you love?
What I love most about the toy industry is that it allows me to embrace my inner child and bring happiness to others through play. Whether it's introducing a child or an adult to a toy that will benefit them, I also find joy in the fun and knowledgeable people within the industry.
Why and how did you get into the Toy and Game industry?
In 2016, I walked into Learning Express Toys just in search of a job, not even realizing what the company was—I initially thought it was a daycare! I applied, got the call, and started within a couple of weeks. Since then, I’ve not only come to love my job but also truly enjoy the work I do. After all, it’s hard not to have fun in such an exciting industry.
What has kept you motivated to stay in the toy industry?
As I focus on healing my inner child, I’ve found that play has become a powerful motivator for me. Play is like a daily dose of joy and rejuvenation it’s essential for a fulfilling life. I want to spread that joy and share the benefits and importance of play with others. A big reason I’m passionate about staying in this industry is the impact my bosses/ mentors have had on me. Their enthusiasm and dedication are genuinely motivating. They care about the growth and success of their team, and their unconditional support has encouraged me to keep learning and investing in myself. Their guidance has been a key factor in my development and continues to inspire me to make the most of every opportunity.
If you look back at yourself 10 years ago, is this where you thought you’d be? Where did you think you’d be? What changed? What went right?
Reflecting on the past 10 years, I never imagined to be where I am today. I certainly have faced many adversities but am grateful for them because they've shaped me into who I am today. Every negative situation faced helped build my values and perspective in life. Ten years ago, I probably imagined myself living in El Salvador with my grandparents. What changed was the opportunity that life and God gave me to start all over again.
What advice do you have for people starting in the industry?
My advice for newcomers is to learn as much as they can from everyone! Enjoy the journey and truly understand what the toy industry is about. Always believe in your potential, whether you are interacting with customers or discovering the latest trends. Embrace every opportunity to grow and remember that every interaction is a chance to make a positive impact.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
The most rewarding aspect of my job is assisting customers with their needs, networking, and attending conventions to discover exciting new toys. My greatest satisfaction comes from helping a mom or grandparent find the perfect toy to support their child's development. Ensuring that they leave with a smile and a positive experience.
What and/or who inspires you?
Several people inspire me, but my number one inspiration is my husband, Jose. He is the most positive person I know! I admire his confidence, his ability to take risks, and his determination to get things done even if he has never done them before. He is truly a hard worker, and I am constantly inspired by his dedication and positive outlook.
Who is your all-time favorite Disney character?
My all-time favorite Disney character is Minnie Mouse. In 2021, I had the opportunity to visit Disney for the first time and meet Minnie and Mickey. It was an incredibly happy and memorable day for me.
What was your life like growing up?
I was born in Chicago and raised in a middle lower-class family, where my parents worked hard to provide a good life for me. When I was 10, we moved to El Salvador due to my parents' divorce. Living in El Salvador for several years gave me the opportunity to become fluent in Spanish. At 15, I returned to the U.S. to attend high school, a period marked by immense challenges and feelings of uncertainty. During those tough times, I never imagined the possibilities that lay ahead. However, my life took a transformative turn when a strong, loving family welcomed me into their home and treated me as one of their own. This incredible support gave me a second chance to become the best version of myself and pursue my dreams. Looking back at my journey, I am proud of what I have accomplished: securing a great job, earning my bachelor's degree, and being surrounded by wonderful, supportive people. These experiences have shaped who I am today, reinforcing my resilience and determination to conquer any challenge that comes my way.
What’s the first thing you usually notice about people?
The first thing that catches my attention in others is their kindness. It's a trait that consistently stands out to me and has a profound impact. Kindness reveals a person's true character and creates a genuine connection, making it an essential aspect of any relationship.
What do you hope your legacy will be?
I hope my legacy will encourage young people and children who are struggling to believe in their own potential. Even when things seem dark or impossible, life has a way of turning around and bringing positive outcomes. The toy and game industry has had a wonderful impact on my life, providing me with rewarding work and meaningful connections. I’m deeply grateful for the opportunities I’ve had and am committed to giving back by mentoring and supporting others in the field. I look forward to continuing my professional growth and contributing positively to the industry. With determination and a supportive community, the opportunities are truly endless. The sky is the limit!!
