Happy Bloomin’ Feel Good Friday!

Why Feel Good Friday? Registration for the Young Inventor Challenge is officially open, and we have an interview below with one of last year’s winners that is guaranteed to make you smile! These young inventors never cease to amaze us—and for some, YIC is the beginning of a lifelong passion and even a future career in the toy industry. You can even be part of the experience by signing up to be a judge.

And…have you met Toy Desk Gilbert yet? You’ll want to! Check out the interview below.

We do have some sad news to share this week. John Fusi passed away, leaving behind an extraordinary life and legacy. Laure LeBlanc shares a beautiful tribute below, along with memories from John’s family.

There is so much to look forward to this November, and we can’t wait to welcome everyone back to Chicago.

Your success is our success!

YIC Spotlight: Eleanor Wyskiel

I first heard of the Young Inventor Challenge from my teacher, Mrs. McNamara. Our class assignment was to create a board game and we worked on it in my school. I was sure it would be an amazing experience. I was totally right.

Before I could make my game, I had to think of ideas. I brainstormed a lot. My two old dogs had recently passed away and so it was hard to think of anything else. I decided I wanted to honor them and make a game about dogs. To make my prototype I used a lot of different things I found around my house, like dice, figurines, tablemats, and cardboard boxes. My sister and I are always making up our own games so I just played with her until I thought of something. I hid the dog and my sister had to figure out where it was. I made clues for her. We played over and over again until the game made sense. I played with my family, and got feedback on what could make it better. Then, my favorite part, testing my game and making changes. I made many changes like adding special items, and the game got better. I made sure I had every detail. I play tested with so many friends and family. After that, I had to write the product description and directions for my game. This part was fun because I love board games and didn’t ever think about how someone wrote all the information on the game to make people want to play. Finally, I created my trifold board for the Chicago Toy and Game Fair. READ MORE

Meet Gilbert: Your Guide to The Toy Association’s Toy Desk

Have you met Gilbert yet? As the friendly face behind the Toy Desk, his job is to make getting support from The Toy Association easier than ever. The Bloom Report editors recently caught up with Gilbert to talk about his origin story, how the Toy Desk came about, and how he’s helping members find answers.

Hi Gilbert, Thanks so much for taking the time to speak with us. First things first! What is your role at The Toy Association?
Gilbert: I’m Gilbert, your trusty guide to the Toy Desk! Think of me as your first stop whenever you have a question for The Toy Association. I may not have all the answers myself (I leave the policy questions to our advocacy team and the technical standards to the experts), but I know exactly who does. My job is simply to help members find answers. READ MORE

Laure LeBlanc's Tribute to John Fusi

John Fusi had this particular favorite expression “Somedays you’re the dog and somedays you’re the fire hydrant”. For me today is kind of a fire hydrant day.

John Fusi has passed away, and his family posted a lovely obituary and it is below. But John had another family: the toy industry. I often wondered why he stayed in the business when he had so many exceptional opportunities elsewhere, but I think he simply loved it. He had countless friends across the industry and throughout the Far East, and his reputation always preceded him. Big John Fusi, also known as “The Big Dog,” was truly one of a kind. I walked trade shows with him, attended meetings, and gave presentations with him by my side. Long before the internet, cell phones, or AI, John carried the business in his head and could discuss every aspect of it. He never took notes, remembered everything, and could calculate costs—from tooling and plastic to shipping and containers on the spot. READ MORE
