Hello

Welcome to Your Weekly News Brief!

Happy Bloomin’ Friday!

This week, two of our feature articles spotlight people honored at the 2022 TAGIE Awards: Leslie Scott (creator of Jenga and much more), recipient of the TAGIE Lifetime Achievement Award, and McMiller’s dynamic duo David McGranaghan and Julian Miller, winners of the Rising Star Innovator of the Year. And—by happy coincidence—both have big announcements this week!

Leslie is introducing her Boundless Play project, a curated eclectic collection of essays, articles, stories, interviews, reviews, and images from remarkable voices across the world of play. I’ve had the joy of spending hours — even whole days — diving into topics with Leslie over the years. I’m excited to share that we’ll be featuring pieces from her collection in future tBR issues!

Meanwhile, viral hitmakers David and Julian will be on national TV December 10th, pitching their award-winning games on Shark Tank. We caught up with them to talk about their leap from acting to entrepreneurship and more.

Leslie Scott (creator of Jenga) announces the launch of BOUNDLESS PLAY

Leslie Scott (creator of Jenga) announces the launch of BOUNDLESS PLAY, the Substack. Using this newsletter publishing platform, she will be presenting - in serial form - all the material she has gathered over the past two years (and is gathering still), which she had intended to publish as BOUNDLESS PLAY, the book. This was before she realised that no one book, however big, could ever be BIG enough to hold everything there is to say about every conceivable facet of play. It turns out that the subject of 'play' is boundless, literally.

The Boundless Play Substack.

Aside from the pieces Leslie has written, BOUNDLESS PLAY has commissioned work from a team of guest writers that includes - award winning journalists, esteemed scholars, world-renowned game-designers, thoughtful theorists and expert play practitioners.  The aim is to be seriously interesting, and playful, and fun.

Boundless Play will be posting regular newsletters, each of which will feature a visually compelling, entertaining, original and thought-provoking article about a different aspect of play. Once posted, these articles will be archived and available to read or re-read at leisure. READ MORE

Brendan Boyle: Bring More Color Into Your Life —

Your Brain Will Thank You

Even here in Palo Alto, we’ve been lucky to catch some real fall color this year. Over the last 30 years, the city has clearly planted more trees that actually turn — more reds, more yellows. Sure, it’s not the East Coast, but it’s not bad at all. And the best part? You get the color without the cold.

There’s something wired deep into the human brain about color. Neuroscience shows that bright, saturated colors activate both the visual cortex and the limbic system at the same time. That means color doesn’t just help us see, it makes us feel. Dopamine and serotonin — the happiness and reward chemicals — spike when we’re surrounded by bold colors. That’s why fireworks never get old. We don’t just watch them. We feel them.

Color is also a time machine back to childhood. Crayons. Finger paint. Summer tables covered in paper. One of my favorite early memories is finger painting — pure freedom, pure mess. READ MORE
