Hello

Welcome to Your Weekly News Brief!

Hallo from Nuremberg!

It may be cold outside, but toys and games are hot here at the 75th Anniversary Spielwarenmesse! As you’ll read in more detail in the articles below, the global toy industry returned to growth in 2025—and for the first time since Circana began tracking the category, every single G12 country posted gains. Now that is something to celebrate!

Congratulations to the Spielwarenmesse ToyAward winners! And a special congratulations to Bob Moog, who was honored with the I.D.I.O.T. Award (International Designer and Inventor of Toys) at last week’s UK Inventor Dinner.

Next up—Toy Fair New York! Have you secured your tickets to the TOTY Awards supporting the work of the Toy Foundation or to the POP Pub event at Connolly’s supporting the Young Inventor Challenge yet? It’s the perfect way to celebrate longtime friends, meet new ones, and toast another toy season for history books—all while supporting and empowering the next generation of People of Play.

Joe Kling Talks His Impact on the Industry, Career Highlights, and Advice to the Next Generation

Hi Joe, thank you for taking time to answer a few questions. You've led such an incredible career. How many years have you been in the Toy Business?
I was in the Toy Industry for 78 years from 1948 to 2025.

How did you get your start, and where did it take you?
After serving as a Staff Sergeant in the Intelligence Division of the Marines for two years, I returned home newly married and looking for work. I saw an ad in The New York Times for an “Office Boy” position at Louis Marx, Inc., then the largest toy company in America, paying $15 a day. Mr. Marx was a demanding boss, but he pushed me to excel. In a few years, I worked my way up to Vice President of Sales.

From Marx Toys, I gained the experience, skills, and drive to start my own toy company. The industry was changing, so after years of success marketing my own products, I merged with View-Master and later acquired IDEAL Toys—makers of Erector Sets, Baby Dolls, and countless classic games. READ MORE

Kevin McNulty's Book One Move at a Time Reviewed by Peggy Brown

One Move at a Time, the book by storied game industry vet Kevin McNulty, is a fun 50-year romp through the memory of one of the game industry’s absolute OGs. The game business, as it is today, well, is what it is. But for those who don't have a deep well of historical knowledge, One Move at a Time is a chronicle of just how different things were in the before-times.

Before big box retail, before online anything, before artificial everything, the business of board games was run on coffee, handshakes, positive ambition and sheer determination.

Kevin starts where he grew up - in Stuyvesant Town - and tells the stories of how New York City and the people around him heavily influenced who he became. There’s nothing about his salt-of-the-earth childhood that would indicate things could have turned out any other way – it’s clear that Kevin was always the Kevin everybody knows and loves. And while some of his old stories might sound a little quaint or even fantastical, his account is 100% legit: this is the way things were done.

Reminiscing about the Toy Building at 200 Fifth Avenue and all the history that bubbled out of it for a century paints the colorful backdrop for the long lists of retailers, travels, distributors, trials, tribulations, and game industry icons that run through this memoir. READ MORE
