Welcome to Your Weekly News Brief!
Happy Bloomin’ Friday!
Batter up! Baseball season is officially open! Tough day for Chicago: the Cubs and White Sox lost, and the weather was rough, but baseball fans (especially Cubs fans) are resilient.
Speaking of resilience, I had the pleasure of seeing Rick Woldenberg yesterday for lunch, thought-provoking conversation across many topics and a tour of Hand2Mind’s offices and one of their many large warehouses (more on the latter in a future newsletter). During the tour, Rick shared framed courtroom watercolors by sketch artist Dana Verkouteren from the Learning Resources, Inc. v. Trump case which he brought to fight against tariffs. The images here don’t fully capture the detail or impact of the paintings, which are quite remarkable. With cameras prohibited in federal courts, only a select few artists are granted access — making these pieces especially unique.

Alex Hochstrasser Talks Bilibo at 25: The Long Game of Play
Hey Alex, thank you for taking the time to speak with us. So Bilibo turns 25 this year. What surprised you most about its longevity?
Alex: Probably that it still feels current.
When I designed it, I wasn't trying to future-proof it. I was trying to strip away anything with an expiration date – no characters, no built-in story, no trend references. Just a shape that taps into something children have always done: pick up an interesting object and figure it out.
It never quite fit in. That turned out to be an advantage.
Never fit in how?
Alex: When I was looking for a manufacturer after graduating, I quickly realized that a product without a clear category makes people uncomfortable. It's not a vehicle, not a figure, not a construction toy. Nobody quite knew which shelf to put it on.
Terri Hitchcock: Can a Holiday Story Universe Direct $100 Million to Charities?
For the past several years, I’ve been working on a question that sits at the intersection of storytelling, play, and purpose.
Every year the holiday season inspires incredible creativity across entertainment, toys, games, collectibles, and family traditions. Entire industries come alive around experiences that families return to year after year.
But despite the scale of the holiday entertainment and retail economy, relatively few entertainment properties are intentionally designed to direct meaningful, recurring funding toward charities and community organizations.
That question ultimately led me to create a project called Knotty or Nice. READ MORE
