You’re Getting Old
Gameplay
To win You’re Getting Old , you must prove you’re not getting old! The game comes with a set of 300 prompt cards, 6 Path To Getting Old cards, and 6 avocado pawns.
The Path To Getting Old cards are a scale from 1 to 10, with 10 meaning you’re old. And how is this scale measured? Hilariously, in pictures. Level 1 is a gaming controller, 2 is a smartphone, 5 is a glass of red wine, 8 is a minivan, 10 is a New Balance (or dad) sneaker. Each level increases with things that according to Gen-Z, is an “old people thing.”
You travel up and down the Path To Getting Old with an avocado pawn based on your answers to the other cards. Each of the other cards has two prompts on each side: an “old” one and a “redeem” one. Each player reads the “old” prompt aloud on their turn, and any player that can relate to it must move their avocado up a level, but, they have the opportunity to “redeem” themselves and move down a level if the other prompt is relatable.
For example, an “old” prompt might read, “You’ve said 8pm is too late to start a movie,” and for everyone who can relate, you must move your avocado up a space on the Path To Getting Old. However, on that same card it might say, “What is Kylie Jenner’s kid named?” and if you can name one of her two children, you can move your avocado back down a level.
The first person to reach level 10 is not only the loser, but they’re also old!
History
This game is relatively new, published by Vango only in 2023. It falls in the same party game category as Apples to Apples and is an excellent cross-generational game to play, making it the game to bring to your next family gathering. The best thing about this game is that it’s actually way more than a game, it’s a hilarious conversation starter, as each player tries to defend their youth or solemnly admit defeat: they are, in fact, getting old.
Alternatively, if this would spark too much debate at the Thanksgiving table, this is also a really fun game to play with a group relatively the same age. Described by the publisher as A Party Game for Aging Millennials, if you’re between the ages of 28ish and 40ish, break this out at your next wine night and it’s sure to be a hit.
