Biographies and Interviews

Hi Luke! We look forward to meeting you at The Chicago Toy and Game Fair and trying our hand at your Lego pinball and claw machines! Thank you for taking time to answer a few questions. Let’s start with asking why you wanted to be on LEGO Masters?

Think of the Super Bowl for football and how it’s the sport’s biggest event of the year. That’s the equivalent of this show for the LEGO community! Being among the most talented builders in the world, competing in timed challenges, with an unlimited amount of LEGO bricks at our disposal is an unbelievable feeling! I have a unique focus when building with LEGO bricks in that I like to build big, interactive creations that move, which sets my Mom and I apart as a team!

What’s one of your favorite parts of the experience?

One of my favorite parts of being on LEGO Masters is teaming up with my amazing Mom! We are a dynamic duo with our own set of strengths which combine to make a fantastic pairing! I specialize in building mechanisms and movement, and my Mom is an expert at storytelling and details. Being a mother-son team, we have a unique dynamic where our closeness and love for one another is a big advantage in pressure-filled situations!

How would you describe being on LEGO Masters?

Being on LEGO Masters is a dream come true! I’ve loved building with LEGO bricks for my entire life, so getting to compete against the top builders in the world is absolutely unreal. It’s an incredible honor to be alongside the best of the best, so my Mom and I need to take our builds to the next level if we want a chance of winning!

What was the most intense challenge on LEGO Masters?

Episode 2 of LEGO Masters featured a wedding cake extravaganza! After being paired into superteams of four builders, not only would the most beautiful cake earn a top spot, the tallest cake would immediately be safe from elimination! It was amazing working with Maia and Jamie for this challenge- having the mother/son and daughter/father pairs in a superteam was a dream come true since our skills as builders perfectly complemented each other! We constructed the tallest cake in the room standing at a staggering height of 9’1”, and I’m incredibly grateful for our team putting trust in me with our towering spire and their ability to capture the essence of our story! The entire challenge was filled with twists and suspense making it an unforgettable experience!

What was your favorite challenge on LEGO Masters?

Episode 6 of LEGO Masters brought the caped crusader into the spotlight with a unique minifigure-scale vehicle challenge, which also involved creating a special gadget! Choosing the Dark Knight era of Batman, we decided to make a massive semi-truck with eighteen wheels, a huge trailer covered with panels, an overcab lightbar, and an automated trunk which released an ATV! We also built a monowheel, giving Batman more maneuverability and speed to traverse the city streets! Not only did we end up in the first ever Top 3 for a challenge, we also won the coveted Golden Brick which can be used to prevent elimination in a future challenge! This was an incredibly fun episode capped off with an unbelievable win and reward! This build was also in memory of my Grandpa Dave, who was a long haul trucker for more than twenty years. He was the first person to tell me about LEGO Masters and ever since the first season, he dreamed I would be on the show. I know he watched this one from heaven with an extra big smile.

What are some of the LEGO projects you’ve worked on in the past?

The first custom project I ever built was a small beach layout, which rapidly expanded into a 63 square-foot city that took up an entire room of our house! From there, I created life-size and interactive arcade machines, massive working roller coasters, and even a fully driveable LEGO Go Kart! I love working on projects that incorporate movement and interactivity. LEGO bricks are often viewed as a static medium, so it’s fun to push the limits of my creativity!

What’s one piece of advice you’d share with the audience?

Channel your passion into creativity and share it with the world! My love of LEGO has brought so many amazing opportunities and people into my life that I never would have imagined. From bringing my builds to conventions, expanding my knowledge of engineering, to now being on national TV, this has all happened because I pursue what I enjoy. Having a creative or enjoyable hobby gives you something to look forward to every single day, and you never know where chasing that dream could take you!
