Inside the creative process of transforming Star Wars concept art into action figures (By Brian Parrish, Design Manager (Action Brands), Hasbro)

One of the most memorable experiences of my career began with a trip to Berkeley, California, to meet Ralph McQuarrie at his home. At the time, I was working on Hasbro’s Concept Art Series of 3.75-inch figures, inspired by McQuarrie’s foundational early sketches for the original Star Wars trilogy. Because many of those drawings showed only front-facing, waist-up views,  translating them into fully realized 3D figures required us to thoughtfully imagine the details left off the page.

Artists like Ralph had a profound influence on me as a child; I spent countless hours studying Star Wars concept-art sketchbooks and drawing the characters myself. Having the opportunity to sit down with the artist whose work had fueled so much of that imagination was truly a dream come true.

The purpose of our visit was to review several of my concept designs and figure sculptures with Ralph and hear his perspective firsthand. Above all, we wanted to ensure  our interpretations remained as faithful as possible to his original vision.

Sitting in Ralph’s living room and hearing him describe his vision for the Star Wars galaxy and the characters who inhabit it, was extraordinary. As he examined each figure, he talked through the thought process behind his original designs and responded with genuine enthusiasm to the choices we had made. Knowing that he was pleased with our work made the experience deeply meaningful. It remains a memory I will never forget, and a lasting reminder of what happens when creative stewardship is grounded in respect for an artist’s original intent.
