Welcome to Your Weekly News Brief!

Happy Bloomin’ Feel Good Friday!

One of the things I love most about our industry is how often someone opens a door for someone else. A conversation, an introduction, a little encouragement—or simply recognizing potential in someone before they fully recognize it in themselves—can change the trajectory of a career. You’ll see that thread throughout this week’s Bloom Report.

We’re delighted to officially welcome Disney’s Robb LaFlamme as the new Chair of our TAGIE Awards Committee and newest member of the POP Advisory Board!

But first, a heartfelt thank you to Disney’s Karri Bean, who is stepping down as the POP Advisory Board Chair and the TAGIE Committee Chair after years of giving her time, energy, ideas, and heart to building POP. Thankfully, Karri isn’t going anywhere—she’ll remain an important part of both. We are incredibly grateful for all she has done and continues to do!

Robb’s own path into product development began when he volunteered one day a week—on his day off—for a year and a half simply to learn. Someone opened a door for him, he ran with it, and today he’s doing the same for others.

We’re also introducing Ben Hansen, Co-Founder of Boppo, one of our new Chicago Toy & Game Fair exhibitors. Boppo began with Ben watching his baby son delight in pressing buttons and flipping light switches. He built him a toy—and eventually left his job to turn that idea into Boppo.

And Rich Mazel, a longtime champion of new talent—young and old—shares stories about supporting inventors at Spin Master and Hasbro. One is about Jay Brown, whom Rich first met as a high school inventor who had already licensed a product. Rich recognized something special, invited him to a Spin Master inventor event, and continued encouraging him. Jay is now in college and still inventing.

Sometimes opening one door is all it takes. Someone once opened a door for each of us. Who can we open one for next?

Robb LaFlamme: Building Categories, Chairing the TAGIEs, and Giving Back Beyond the Toy Aisle

Hi Robb! We’re excited to officially welcome you as Chair of the TAGIE Awards Committee and to the POP Advisory Board—and thought this was the perfect time for our readers to get to know you a little better. Why don't you start by telling us what do you do in and out of our industry?
I'm the Director of Merchandising, Hardlines at Disney Experiences, overseeing Toys, Plush, Dolls, Collectibles, Ornaments, Fine Art, and Souvenirs. I've been with Disney for 25 years now, with the vast majority of that time spent developing product across a wide range of categories. I'm part of the vertical retail team at Disney that leads the retail strategies for Disney Parks and Disney Stores. On any given day that means everything from shaping multi-year category strategy to sitting in a showroom talking through product reviews with my team. I also chair the TAGIE Awards Committee and sit on the POP Advisory Board, so a good chunk of my world outside of Disney is spent with this industry's community too.

Outside of the toy space, I'm an active volunteer within my hometown of Celebration, FL, a Founding Member of the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, and I love to travel, garden, fish, ski, and enjoy good food (and wine). READ MORE

Ben Hansen on making Boppo, Computer Programming and more!

Hi Ben! Thanks for taking the time to speak with us. For our readers, can you please who are you and what do you do?
My name is Ben Hansen, and I’m the inventor and co-founder of Boppo, the screen-free tablet. I’m a software engineer, but in true startup fashion my job includes doing whatever is needed to help Boppo become better, whether it is working with our suppliers, testing out hardware, speaking with customers, or writing code, I do a little bit of everything.

Why and how did you get into the Toy and Game industry?
As a software engineer, I didn’t originally plan to join the toy industry but am very happy to have ended up here. The inspiration for Boppo came when I noticed how my son, who was a baby at the time, loved to press buttons or turn light switches on and off. So I built him a toy where pushing buttons is rewarded. Rich Mazel: "He's a Good Kid"

What one high school inventor taught me about how our industry should treat the next generation:

I've seen something like a fifty thousand pitches in my career.. (including several inside or just outside of the bathroom at Javits, Nuremberg, Dallas, HK….)

A few years ago, while I was in the innovation group at Spin Master Toys, I got a cold outreach from a kid named Jay Brown. Not sure why, but he stood out. I went with my gut. I learned this lesson from David Fuhrer as I stood out to him for some reason.

That happens more than you'd think. What doesn't happen more than you'd think is that the kid had already licensed a product. In high school, he got a product placed! READ MORE
